Math Assistant, Coach, or Educator? Choosing the Right Type of Tutor

art 2 of 3: How to Hire (and Manage) a Tutor

You've figured out what your child needs (Part 1). Now: who should actually be delivering it? Not all "tutors" do the same job.

Step 3: Three Types of Tutors

Math assistant

  • Peer or college student

  • Helps only with homework you already have

  • Doesn't bring their own material or diagnose deeper gaps

Math coach

  • Like a trainer — guided exercises, builds "math stamina"

  • Usually a STEM background, not necessarily a trained teacher

  • May or may not bring supplemental material

Educator

  • Can spot gaps, supplement learning, and plan ahead

  • Brings their own materials and teaching expertise

  • Best fit for real foundational issues
